Childhood Delights

Those afternoons in summer were delightful
For a handful of phalsas and tamarind, grateful
We, my sister and I would use that time
To plan and accomplish the great crime.

Stealthily we would sneak into the store room
We shouldn’t get caught, it would spell our doom!
We had this one thought, to get to the tamarind jar
Before the elders came back from dreamland afar!
The phalsas, daddy would buy for us from the bazaar
Oh! How I remember us eating those for an hour.
We were very careful not to swallow a seed
We were good children, to elders stories we paid heed.

We didn’t want them to sprout branches from our tummy
Walking around looking like trees would look so funny.
All afternoon we would relish the tangy flavours of these fruits
Sometimes, add a little salt and red chilli powder to the juice!
Yummy! These were our simple childhood delights
Not pizzas, pastas, tacos or other fancy delectable bites!
